How long do pump mechanical seals last?

The lifespan of a pump mechanical seal can vary depending on several factors, including the operating conditions, the design of the seal, and the maintenance practices used.

Most seal manufacturers state that operation of the seal at one of its limits, such as pressure, speed, or temperature, will result in a minimum lifespan of two years; three years with some seal types such as those specified in Standard API 682. However, these published limits may be overstated or unreliable for cyclic operation.

In practice, some seals manufacturers have successfully implemented programs to improve Mean Time Between Repair (MTBR) and are achieving three years or more average seal life. This has reduced the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) of their pump population.

The lifespan of a pump mechanical seal can vary depending on several factors. Proper selection, installation, and maintenance of the seal can help to extend its lifespan and improve the reliability of the pump.
